In our goal of developing effective communicators and critical thinkers, McDowell students receive instruction in four critical areas:

    1) Reading Our students must be able to read closely and analytically to comprehend a range of increasingly complex literary and informational texts.

    2) Writing - Our students must be able to produce effective and well-grounded writing for a range of purposes and audiences.

    3) Speaking and Listening Our students must be able to employ effective speaking and listening skills for a range of purposes and audiences.

    4) Research - Our students must be able to engage in research/inquiry to investigate topics and to analyze, integrate, and present information.

These four focus areas apply to all ELA curriculum.
